Acid Reflux – Treatment Strategies

Prescription medications used to treat acid reflux include H2 antagonists, also known as H2 receptor blockers, and proton-pump inhibitors, or PPI, medications. H2 blockers such as cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine and ranitidine (Zantac) work by interfering with special histamine receptors in the stomach, thereby decreasing the production of acid. PPI medications like omeprazole work by reducing the amount of acid made by glands in the stomach. Other medications that are sometimes used to treat acid reflux include antacid medications and sucralfate.

Prescription Medications for Acid Reflux

While over-the-counter (OTC) medications have become more available for treating acid reflux symptoms, some acid reflux medication brands are only available with a prescription. Acid reflux medications that require a prescription include rabeprazole (AcipHex), pantoprazole (Protonix) and dexlansoprazole (Dexilant). Depending on the formulations, prescriptions are sometimes also needed for esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid) and omeprazole (Prilosec) when treating acid reflux.

Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are medications that can reduce acid secretion and acid concentration. Many PPI brands are available both over-the-counter although certain strengths are only available by prescription. Active ingredients in PPIs differ in their isomers, leading to differences in how long it takes the medications to be processed by the body.

Acid Reflux Medications – Side Effects

Acid reflux medications, including prescription and OTC medications, can cause side effects just like other medications. Side effects of acid reflux medications include palpitations, muscle cramps and dizziness. Acid reflux medicines can also cause allergic reactions in susceptible people. Questions about a particular acid reflux treatment should consult with their medical provider and a pharmacist.

Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux is a condition in which acid and other contents found in the stomach move backwards up the digestive tract and into the esophagus. Acid reflux is also known as acid indigestion, heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Symptoms of acid reflux include pain and burning in the stomach area, an acid taste in the mouth, bad breath, and tooth decay.
